Indonesian Museums Documentation Project

The Indonesian Museums Documentation Project (IMDP) is a collaborative initiative led by SEAMS (Yayasan Jalin Narasi Budaya) in partnership with the Dinas Kebudayaan Provinsi DKI Jakarta and Indonesian Heritage Agency (IHA), supported by the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP).

Running from 2024 to 2026, the project enhances how museums across Jakarta manage, preserve, and share their collections by focusing on three core areas:

1. Collection Documentation & Provenance Research
SEAMS is working closely with 12 public museums in Jakarta to document over 1,200 collection items and research the provenance of 60 colonial-era objects housed at the National Museum of Indonesia. Using the Significance 2.0 methodology, this research helps fill critical gaps in collection knowledge, supporting transparency, accountability, and deeper historical understanding.

2. Jakarta Digital Collections (JDC)
IMDP is developing a bilingual (Bahasa Indonesia–English) metadata and cataloguing system under the Jakarta Digital Collections initiative. By adopting international documentation standards—such as the Getty’s AAT and TGN—and adapting them to the local context, this system will unify collection data across institutions and improve internal workflows and future public access through an interactive digital platform.

3. Capacity Building & Public Engagement
Through a series of practical workshops, curatorial seminars, and digital exhibitions, the project promotes sustainable museum practices and encourages public participation. These activities not only build capacity among museum staff but also increase public awareness about the role of documentation in cultural preservation.
